Soy Supplement Lowers Risk of Bone Loss

 

A research study just published in the American Journal of  Clinical Nutrition found that women taking 120 milligrams per day of soy isoflavones as a dietary supplement lost less bone density at the hip over a three year period than did women receiving placebo. The researchers describe the effect as “modest”. The study was done by the Nutrition and Wellness Research Center at Iowa State University

Hold the salt

A recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine projects big benefits to public health that could occur with a small reduction in daily salt intake.

 

The authors of the study estimate that cutting back on just 3 grams of salt a day per person, could bring a dramatic decrease in serious illness from coronary heart disease (CHD).

Antifungal Drug Plus Supplement Knock Out Yeast

The dietary supplement lactoferrin is the subject of promising research for its ability to augment drug therapy for candida (yeast).

 

Scientists at the University Centre for Pharmacy in The Netherlands looked at potential beneficial drug-supplement interaction between lactoferrin and fluconazole (brand name Diflucan), a drug used for treating yeast infections.

An Oil Change for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the main nerve to the hand (the median nerve), is damaged as it passes over the inside of the wrist, travelling through a path of fibers called the carpal tunnel. Workout Recovery Supplement

Recent research looks at the potential benefits of the amino acid L-citrulline, known as citrulline, as a workout recovery supplement and to help boost immunity after exercise.

 

Researchers at a University in Spain have found that citrulline can help preserve immune function after strenuous exercise. This is important because strenuous exercise causes a decline in immune function which starts when the exercise ends. The drop in immune function is associated with weakened function of white blood cells called PMN’s, which are the body’s first line of defense against infection.
