Zinc Boosts Recovery from Stroke

Zinc is known to have significant effects on neurological and immune function. But for vegetarians and the elderly, zinc intake is often lower than the recommended daily allowance.

 

Physicians at a rehabilitation hospital in Italy looked at how zinc could impact victims of stroke.  They studied recovery from recent stroke among patients who were adequately nourished except for a zinc consumption of under 7 milligrams per day. Continue reading »

St. John’s wort is a plant with yellow flowers whose use as an herbal remedy was first recorded in ancient Greece. Soy contains unique bioflavonoids with an isoflavone structure, like genistein and daidzen, which have estrogen-like effects in the human body.

 

Research done in the United States and Australia suggests potential benefits of soy isoflavones on healthy post-menopausal women. However, the benefits of soy on cognition have not materialized in some studies, with some research finding no benefit for cognitive function when soy isoflavones were given to women.

Turmeric, a shrub related to ginger, is grown throughout India, other parts of Asia, and Africa. Known for its warm, bitter taste, turmeric gives curry its distinctive bright yellow color. Turmeric’s finger-like underground stems (rhizomes) are peeled and dried to make a powder and are used in capsules, teas, or liquid extracts. Turmeric is also commonly used to color other food products such as mustard and cheese. It should not be confused with Javanese turmeric.
