FDA Warns on Cholesterol Drug Zocor

 

Cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins are among the most prescribed medications in the U.S.

 

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been evaluating the statin drug Zocor (simvastatin) and has issued a warning that the drug could increase the risk of muscle injury. The most severe form of muscle injury could lead to kidney damage, kidney failure, and death, according to the FDA warning.

 Lower Heart Disease Risk by Combining Statin and Arginine

 

Statin drugs can be effective in reducing blood levels of cholesterol but have limited effectiveness in reducing blood levels of other types of fat, especially triglycerides. High levels of triglycerides in blood are considered to be an important risk factor for heart disease. Their levels are often not reduced by statin drugs or by low fat, cholesterol-reducing diets.
